Sunset and Telescopes at the Griffith Observatory

We’ve had a pretty quiet week and weekend after my brother and niece left last week so this is going to be a very short and sweet post! We went to the cinema on Friday night to see Detroit (amazing film – based on a true story and I can’t believe that actually happened) and had a day at home on Saturday doing jobs.

We visited the Griffith Observatory back in March and always said we wanted to go back to watch the sunset from there, so on Sunday we packed up a picnic and the pooch and headed down to LA.

It was busier than I anticipated and Charlie got lots of attention as per usual, so was in his element laying on his back for belly rubs from strangers whilst we tried to eat our picnic.

We had a clear evening so I got some nice photos of the sun setting behind the Hollywood Hills.

I think the observatory makes for really nice photos! I love the huge domes and think they give a nice perspective to pictures. You also get amazing views over LA from the observatory roof, but my night time photography needs a bit of practice.

They have the huge telescopes that are in the observatory open to the public, but they also have 3 others that are set up on the lawn in the evening to look at the moon and Jupiter (I think, I don’t know much about astronomy!). The queues were huge though, so after waiting in line to look at the moon we decided that was probably enough. We may head back another time, in winter perhaps, when it will hopefully be a bit quieter.

Like I said, just a short post from me today. We’re going away on Friday for the weekend, to Carmel to go camping for the weekend which I’m really looking forward. I’m sure I’ll be writing about it as soon as we are back.
